Individual Psychotherapy
I provide individual psychotherapy sessions to adults and specialize in the following presenting concerns:
-
Stress management related to a variety of stressors, such as career/work stress, or relationships (please note that I do not do family or couples therapy)
-
Supporting parents to be the parents they want to be as they adjust to the stress of parenting, from the child's birth through adulthood
-
Anxiety-related disorders
-
Coping with chronic health conditions
-
Coping with cancer (recent or past diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship issues)
-
Chronic pain
-
-
Grief and loss, particularly related to Prolonged Grief Disorder, in which you are experiencing intense yearning and sadness associated with a loss that occurred more than 6 months to one year ago
-
Beginning or maintaining a health behavior change, such as quitting smoking, changing eating patterns, exercising.
-
Insomnia and other sleep issues
In addition to specializing in the above issues, I am also well trained to provide evidence-based treatment in the following areas:
-
Depression
-
Post-traumatic stress
I believe psychotherapy should be an interactive and time-limited endeavor.
This means that it is NOT my goal for us to meet indefinitely, but that we will identify specific and attainable treatment goals and work together to reach those specific goals using a prot0col-based approach.
A typical course of treatment with me might look something like this:
-
Sessions 1-3: Assessment (discussion of the issues that are bringing you to therapy, general history gathering, and discussion of treatment goals)
-
Session 4: I provide a menu of treatment options that usually include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), or other evidence-based treatments known to be effective in treating your presenting concern. For example, if you are coming to me for grief and loss, I would offer Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy (PGDT) as an option.
-
Sessions 5+: We work towards the specific treatment goals identified in sessions 1-3, using the method selected during session 4.
Depending on the scope of the goals for therapy and how we work, some clients find relief after a single session. More typically, a course of therapy might last 20-50 sessions, though this is quite variable and depends heavily on how much we are trying to accomplish and how much work you are doing outside of session. For more information about the types of treatments that I offer, see What is "A Rooted Life?"
Telemental health
Telemental health is therapy conducted using a secure online platform. We are able to share documents and draw on a digital whiteboard during session. If you do not have a computer, there is some limited functioning available for tablets and smartphones as well.
Research supports that telemental health is as effective as in-person sessions, and has the added benefit of being able to reach clients who might not otherwise have access to mental health resources. It is also an option for when there is inclement weather that prevents travel, one of us is mildly sick and we want to limit the spreading of germs, or if your work schedule does not allow getting away for a therapy session plus travel time.
I am a member of PsyPact, which means that my clients can be located in any of the approved and active states listed here: https://psypact.org/mpage/psypactmap.
Mind-Body Based Psychotherapy
Health and wellness is a whole-body job. In addition to talking about thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, I rely on mindful body-based practices to provide a "felt-sense" of our interventions. These practices include mindfulness, deep relaxation and self-hypnosis, and seated or moving meditations. As desired, we can also discuss how dietary and other lifestyle factors can influence mental and physical well-being. Most insurances do not reimburse for mindful-movement interventions. Thus, if you choose this modality, you will likely be responsible for the full fee (see below) without the option for insurance reimbursement.
For people with chronic pain, I designed and researched an eight-week yoga class series for pain. The class series significantly decreased how much pain was interfering in the lives of participants and decreased their fear of moving, both in class and out in their lives.
Fees
Initial 50-minute session (CPT code 90791): $225
50-minute session (CPT code 90834): $200
75-minute session (CPT code 90837): $275
Insurance:
I am paneled with Aetna, Lyra EAP, Medicare (not Medicare Advantage plans), Molina/CHPW, and Tricare. I am paneled with Regence through April 2024. If you are located out of Washington State, and you have one of these insurances, I might be able to bill them on a case-by-case basis.
I am Out-of-Network for all other insurances. If your insurance provides "out-of-network benefits," your insurance might cover a portion of my fee. You will be responsible for the full session fee at the time of service, I will provide you a receipt for our session, and you can submit it to your insurance for reimbursement.
I strongly encourage you to also contact your insurance company by calling the customer service number listed on the back of your card to determine your benefits, if they offer out-of-network coverage, and if telemental health services are covered. I also recommend inquiring about how many mental health sessions are covered per year and at what rate (using the CPT codes listed above) so that you are fully informed about what your cost for therapy will be.
